Quick, fact-based post today on eBook success from publishing expert (co-owner of U-Publish) and author (Steal This eBook!) Danny O. Snow, who recently wrote a white paper for the New Communications Research think tank on 2012 eBook performance (and I’m beyond honored he quoted little ole me). Danny is a regular contributor to Publisher’s Weekly and multiple other publications.

Many authors still think publishing a paperback is the most important option, or think readers have to own a Kindle or Nook to read eBooks (free apps). Think again:

Fact #1: The royalty pool for KDP Select (Amazon’s Kindle program for authors) is $1.4 mil in December, and will be close to $1 mil per month during both Jan and Feb.  This means that e-Books borrowed by Amazon Prime members will pay record royalties until March.

Fact #2: On December 25, zillions of lucky consumers will open boxes containing bright, shiny new iPads, Kindles and smartphones.  On December 26 they’ll realize that their new toys are empty, and start downloading. This means that you need an e-Book on Kindle NOW, and there’s (barely) still enough time to get it done.  Enroll it in KDPS (KDP Select) if you want to be paid for borrowed copies in January and February.

If you aren’t happy with the results, just wait ninety days and “un-enroll” (reminder: enrollment automatically renews unless you manually opt out) from KDPS.  Then you can try Smashwords.com — which ports to most of the other major e-Bookstores except Amazon and Google — or PubIt! from Barnes & Noble, or any other e-bookseller of your choice.

None of our advice about Kindle borrows and freebies means anything if the author doesn’t work relentlessly to promote the e-Book before, during and after the launch date or a KDPS giveaway.

With 230,000+ new self-published books appearing annually, even the BEST book can easily be overlooked.  In today’s world it doesn’t matter whether your book is published by a big-name publishing house, or by you; either way, the author, not the publisher, drives readers to the store, period.

Stay tuned to learn how you can publicize your tree-Book or e-Book more effectively, and wring more revenue from your writing!
