What is the Clubhouse App and How Can Writers Benefit? with @helpmenaomi
What is Clubhouse?
This is a summary of WHAT IS CLUBHOUSE? #BookMarketingChat with guest Naomi Nakashima @helpmenaomi. Naomi is an expert publishing consultant and has made a splash on Clubhouse. Definitely give her a follow!
What is the Clubhouse App (@joinclubhouse)?
The @joinclubhouse is a new social networking app based on drop-in audio chat. The closest way I could describe it would be to imagine that a Twitter Chat is being broadcast like a podcast.
Chat participants are having conversations in real-time about a topic they all love, but they can come and go as they please through the length of the chat.
How can you get onto Clubhouse (@joinclubhouse)?
Right now, @JoinClubhouse is still in private beta, so getting in might be hard depending on who you know. It’s only available for iOS, although the Android app is in development. And it’s by invitation only, so you have to know someone who is already on Clubhouse to get in. To add to that, each person on Clubhouse is only granted one invitation to start. But there are currently about 3 million people on the platform.
When I joined last year there were only about 500K members, so it’s growing fast and it’s only a matter of time before you’ll have that invitation and be able to hop on.
What are some of your favorite features about Clubhouse (@joinclubhouse)?
I love that it puts conversation above content. There’s no getting camera-ready or putting together graphics and copy. You can just hop onto @joinclubhouse and jump right into a room or open one up yourself and start talking. And it’s really a leveler as far as the playing field is concerned. It doesn’t matter how much clout you have or how many followers you have, just what you are bringing to the conversation.
You can find yourself on stage and trading ideas with big names in publishing who are just as interested in what you have to say as you are in learning from them. And it’s more intimate than hopping onto someone’s Live on Facebook.
What are some ways authors can use Clubhouse (@joinclubhouse)?
There are a lot of amazing opportunities on @joinclubhouse for any authors who are able to secure an invitation. First, there are a few different private communities called Clubs that are being formed. Each one is focused on a different subject. There is one major writing community to connect with other writers. I have a community on book writing, there are other Clubs set up on book marketing and how to build multiple streams of revenue from their books.
In the future, once @joinclubhouse is out of beta and is public, I imagine that these Clubs will be a major piece for many authors looking for a place to hold live Q&A events, launch team groups, and other community events with their readers.
What tips do you have for a new author who just signs up on Clubhouse (@joinclubhouse)?
The Clubhouse creators host a Townhall every Sunday morning where they answer questions and talk about the future of Clubhouse and their roadmap, so I definitely recommend attending some of those if you have any questions. I have found it to be much more effective to concentrate on curating my main feed, called the Hallway, by choosing who to follow carefully instead of worrying about who will follow me.
Finally, connect your Twitter or your Instagram to your Clubhouse profile. Clubhouse doesn’t have an on-site private text function: no chats, no DMs. So if someone wants to reach you after a conversation, they will go through one of those connections.
Where can people find more about you and Clubhouse?
You can find me hanging out on Clubhouse most evenings and over the weekends when I’m not working. My username is @helpmenaomi, same as it is on Twitter. I wrote up a monster article on Clubhouse and how to get started on it for the Social Media Examiner: https://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/clubhouse-app-how-to-get-started
